Professor of English, Executive Director of the Spence Wilson Center for Interdisciplinary Humanities
Scott Newstok teaches the history and practice of writing in English, as well as across the humanities, including courses cross-listed with Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Educational Studies, Environmental Studies, Media Studies, Theatre, and Search. He has offered interdisciplinary seminars devoted to Overton Park; poetry and medicine; the history of citizenship; early modern racial discourse; and the legacy of philosopher Michel de Montaigne. In addition to his 蜜聊直播 classes, he has taught for the Liberal Arts in Prison Program; the Meeman Center for Lifelong Learning; the 蜜聊直播 Summer School in London; British Studies at Oxford; and local primary and secondary schools. Professor Newstok has received the 2012 Campus Life Award for Outstanding Faculty Member; the 2016 Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching; and the 2021 Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity. In 2026 he was named an honorary Fellow of the English Association, in recognition of his outstanding work and achievements as a member of the community of English.
Dr. Newstok has published six books: a scholarly edition of Kenneth Burke鈥瞫 Shakespeare criticism; a collection of essays on Macbeth and race (co-edited with Ayanna Thompson); a monograph on early modern English epitaphs; an edition of Michael Cavanagh's Paradise Lost: A Primer; How to Think Like Shakespeare (winner of the 2025 Parnassus Prize); and a collaboration with John Guillory on an archival history of the cultural technique of "close reading," which includes a free public database online. His involvement with Digital Humanities initiatives dates back to 1996, when he created the first Willa Cather Website. Newstok has since organized the Memphis visit of Robert Darnton, co-founder of the Digital Public Library of America; hosted a 蜜聊直播 lecture about quantitative textual analysis by Stanford Literary Lab Director Mark Algee-Hewitt; and served on the Digital Strategies Committee of the Shakespeare Association of America. He's currently editing Michel de Montaigne's essays on education, in a new version by award-winning translator Tess Lewis.
Newstok鈥瞫 work has been recognized by grants and fellowships from the American Library Association, the American Philosophical Society, the Associated Colleges of the South, the Delmas Foundation, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Fulbright Program, the Institute for Research in the Humanities, the Marco Institute, the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Humanities Center, the Newberry Library, and the Tennessee Arts Commission. In his prior 蜜聊直播 as the Founding Director of the Pearce Shakespeare Endowment, Newstok hosted scores of visiting scholars and artists in partnership with Memphis-area cultural organizations, including Opera Memphis, for which he was a trustee. He was a founding board member of the Catherine Project, an online lyceum that provides humanities tutorials for free to the public. He previously served as Co-Director (with Dr. Judith Haas) of Postgraduate Scholarships; Humanities faculty member of the 蜜聊直播 Board of Trustees; President of 蜜聊直播鈥 Phi Beta Kappa chapter; education Vice-President of Beth Sholom Synagogue; parent representative of the Libertas School of Memphis; and trustee of Humanities Tennessee, the state chapter of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
